Operations – Improving the sustainability of our operations

In line with our corporate philosophy of Kyosei, we aim to reduce the environmental impacts of our operations. Our environmental charter outlines the key steps we take to achieve a balance between sustainable growth and prosperity, responsible resource use and reduced environmental impact.

We take action through initiatives, policies and procedures to reduce impacts and help prevent climate change. Our environmental management strategy includes action on carbon management;

limiting resource use; emissions, waste and pollution control; and recycling. At our sites, we also look at biodiversity and habitat improvement, where possible.

The box below shows our EMEA targets and progress to date:

Saving carbon dioxide

  • Logistics: We are changing our distribution methods to rail and sea transport to reduce CO2 emissions. Our process of reducing product size and packaging results in greater load efficiency. We have central warehouses in Europe. Viewing Europe as a single (virtual) warehouse allows us to monitor stock levels at national warehouses up to the moment of product shipment. So we can deliver products where they are needed and avoid transporting them between warehouses.
  • eMaintenance: Many of our multifunction devices can be serviced remotely and any problems resolved. This avoids CO2 from engineers’ visits and offers customers a quicker fix.
  • Office space: Under the Océ integration programme, we have made savings of 36,000 m² on our office area since 2011 – equating to over a kilotonne of CO2
  • Company cars: Canon Europe’s company car policy currently (2014) restricts levels of CO2 emissions to a maximum of 120g/km, having been progressively reduced against previous years. Only Russia continues at 130g/km due to limited availability of appropriate cars meeting 120g/km. In some countries we offer tips or courses to company car drivers, encouraging them to drive more safely and efficiently to save fuel.
  • Business travel: We monitor annual business travel statistics and encourage employees to use video and teleconferencing facilities where available.

Energy efficiency

  • Buildings: We have a refurbishment policy that includes environmental improvements to our buildings when structures permit. This includes features like solar PV panels, automatic lighting and heat exchangers.
  • IT efficiencies: By replacing and virtualising servers, since 2009, we have almost halved the energy needed to power and cool our data centres (2.8 million kWh vs 4.4 million kWh).
  • Renewable energy: We aim to buy renewable energy, depending on local cost and availability. Currently 11 European offices buy between 70-100% renewable energy.

Resource saving

  • Picture_banner_waste redPaper: We follow a responsible paper procurement policy and have a chain of custody for our complete paper distribution network. Both our EMEA head office and eight of our European sales operations have FSC® or PEFC certification. In 2013, 75% of the paper we procured was FSC or PEFC certified.
  • Water: We reduce water use across our operations, including reducing the amount of water used to flush toilets and using rainwater and grey water, where facilities allow.
  • Events: We have events guidelines that advise organisers and suppliers on areas ranging from materials to be used for exhibition stands to separating waste for recycling to avoid landfill. We work with our event suppliers to monitor compliance and audit some of our larger events. When possible, we re-use event stand materials at subsequent events.
  • Office waste: Where facilities allow, our offices separate waste for recycling, to avoid landfill.

Customer and employee safety

We have mandatory chemical safety awareness training for employees handling hazardous chemicals. These ensure chemicals are handled and used correctly, safeguarding employees and customers. Our green procurement programme helps us make sure our suppliers adhere to relevant regulations on hazardous chemicals in items procured by us.

Climate change mitigation

We train all employees in environmental awareness through induction days and online learning to help them understand the importance we place on reducing our environmental impacts and how it fits within their job role.

Many national Canon offices and employees actively support environmental projects and organisations in their community through sponsorship, donation and volunteering.

Canon UK’s office is a good example of biodiversity and habitat restoration working alongside business. The office grounds include landscaped and natural areas that are home to a variety of wildlife, including bee hives. In Spain, Canon supports the Canon Responsible Forest (Bosque Responsable Canon) in Valencia, with employees helping to plant native trees and prune vegetation.
